The 2019 Copa Libertadores final was the culminating round of the competition that determined the 60th champion. It was played for the first time in a single match on November 23 between the two best teams in the tournament from the semifinals .
It was contested by Flamengo and River Plate at the Estadio Monumental in Lima . The final was held again between Brazilian and Argentine teams after the 2017 edition , which was the fifteenth (9 Argentine wins against 5 Brazilian wins). This was Flamengo's second final, while River Plate was playing its seventh.
The final was originally scheduled to be played at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile , but due to the social unrest that took place in the country weeks before the match, CONMEBOL decided to move it to Peru .
It was the fourth time that Lima hosted a Copa Libertadores final (having played the play-off final between Nacional and Estudiantes in 1971 , the first leg finals between Universitario and Independiente in 1972 and Sporting Cristal and Cruzeiro in 1997 —although these three previous finals were played at the Estadio Nacional— ) and the first time that it was played at the Estadio Monumental.
Had the match ended tied after regular time, two 15- minute extra periods would have been played, and if the tie persisted , penalty kicks would have been taken . Video assistant refereeing (VAR) was also used in this final .
Peruvian referee Diego Haro , who was one of the additional VAR referees, was replaced by his compatriot Víctor Hugo Carrillo , due to a breach of internal refereeing policy.
Champion Flamengo earned a spot in the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup . They also competed in the 2020 Recopa Sudamericana against the 2019 Copa Sudamericana winners and also qualified for the group stage of the 2020 Copa Libertadores .
Gabriel Barbosa was the hero of the final, scoring both goals in the comeback and winning the award for best player of the final
