The shirts were stripped. They were only the right colour and had the brand logo. The respective crests and numbers had to be added to each shirt. But… There were no numbers, no crests. Someone offered an old model of the AFA crest to embroider and another person said he had some numbers to contribute.

"The AFA crest is the old one , it doesn't have the laurels. The numbers were supposed to be white but they were dark grey . If you look closely, they are shiny, grey, American football numbers ," Moschella explained. A video that Maradona himself shared on his social networks shows –in Burruchaga's voice– what happened hours before the clash at the  Azteca Stadium : "One day before the match at 6 in the afternoon, the women who clean the shirts are sewing. If we become world champions, they have to build a monument to all of us."

" It was 12 at night and the girls who fed us were ironing on the numbers. Putting on those shiny grey numbers. There are only 40 shirts lying around and most of the players don't have one," added Oscar Ruggeri on the subject a few years ago on  Fox Sports .

The following scene is already familiar: Diego putting his fist in to open the scoring and, a minute later, dribbling past every Englishman in his path to score one of the most beautiful goals in history. That shirt would continue on its own path to tell a parallel story.

The legendary ten ended up in the hands of English midfielder Steve Hodge , who was a starter that day in Mexico, and who exchanged the shirt with Diego. In 2003 , he decided that this precious treasure was a cornerstone of modern football and, as such, should be displayed to the public.
