*Incredible ROOKIE JERSEY! Mario Kempes #10 Argentina National Team MATCH WORN SHIRT for FIFA WORLD CUP 1974 Qualifiers match vs Bolivia played at Bolivia, September 23, 1973! THE PHANTON TEAM HISTORIC MATCH READ!
Story: The phantom team is known as the Argentine team that trained in parallel with the regular team for several weeks at an altitude of 2,500 m in preparation to play at the Hernando Siles stadium against Bolivia for the 1974 World Cup qualification . The match was played on September 23, 1973. It is remembered for being one of the few occasions in which Argentina beat Bolivia as a visitor. The victory practically qualified Argentina for the 1974 World Cup.
For the 1974 World Cup , CONMEBOL had 3.5 of the 16 total places available for the World Cup. One place was assigned directly to Brazil, as the current champion of the competition, so a total of 8 teams competed for 2.5 places.
The teams were divided into three groups, two of three and one of two. The winner of each group of three automatically qualified for the World Cup, while the winner of the group of two teams had to play a play-off with a UEFA representative. Group 2 consisted of Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia.
Argentina was eliminated from the previous World Cup after losing to Bolivia away and drawing with Peru in Buenos Aires. This is the only elimination of this team in the qualifying stage so far. Argentina had ambitions of hosting the 1978 World Cup, but two consecutive eliminations would make it unlikely.
Bolivia had Ovidio Messa as its only big name and had not participated in a World Cup since 1950. However, it played its home games at the Hernando Siles stadium, located at 3,577 m above sea level , which gave it an important advantage, since its players (unlike the visitors) were acclimatised to the lack of oxygen. Argentina had only managed one victory in this stadium, in 1965. In the most recent precedent, in 1969 in La Paz, Bolivia had won 3-1.
