Story:

Partying, music, alcohol, extravagance, a lot of controversy and secrecy were the main characters of the wedding of Diego Maradona and Claudia Villafañe – to which the press did not have access at the time. After 10 years together and two daughters in common, the couple celebrated one of the most talked about nuptials in Argentina. Sport, celebrities, politics and power came together on the afternoon of November 7, 1989 for the wedding in the Church of the Holy Sacrament in Buenos Aires.

Dressed in a majestic outfit worthy of royalty, the bride made her triumphant entrance while the sacred choir sang Ave Maria . The impressive design with long sleeves and a long train, designed by the fashion designer of the moment Elsa Serrano , required 800 rock crystals, 1,500 precious stones and 5 kilos of crystal beads from France. With the highest quality materials, which had been requested from the most important factories in Europe, the designer created a dream dress for the bride. To complement the sublime dress, Villafañe wore a tiara of diamonds and pearls set in white gold.

The opulence and luxury of the celebration could not be limited to the dress alone. The Argentine footballer had promised Villafañe that the celebration would be as sumptuous as possible, so for the big party, the bride and groom chose the traditional indoor stadium Luna Park . The sports arena where Frank Sinatra , the American singer Liza Minelli and Pope John Paul II had performed was transformed into an ostentatious ballroom designed by Miguel Ernesto Caldenley . It included a large stage for the newlyweds, the entire floor carpeted in grey and a monumental central chandelier six metres high and with 12,000 light bulbs.

Among the 1,200 people invited to the wedding of the year in Buenos Aires were Mauricio Macri ; Carlos Menem , president of Argentina at the time; Fidel Castro ; the singer Fito Páez ; Guillermo Coppola , the footballer's manager at the time; Alfredo di Stefano and the entire Napoli squad. A charter flight from Italy was booked for the latter so they wouldn't miss the celebration.
