Story:
On June 29, 2004, Messi made his debut for the Argentine National Team: it was a friendly U-20 match against Paraguay
Lionel Messi's career with the Argentine national team is going through its best moment. Champion of the 2021 Copa América, the Finalissima and, fundamentally, of the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Leo is also the Albiceleste's all-time top scorer. A journey that began 20 years ago, on June 29, 2004 , and he remembered that debut.
When he was still a youngster making waves in Barcelona's youth system and there was already talk of his upcoming debut in the top flight, the big question was whether he would play for Spain (as was suggested), the country that welcomed him at the age of 12, or whether he would choose the land where he was born. That's why the leaders got their act together and organised a friendly between the Under-20s and their counterparts from Paraguay at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium of Argentinos Juniors. Hugo Tocalli called him up and Messi didn't hesitate: he travelled, came on and scored a great goal.
Messi's debut in Argentina, with a great goal against Paraguay
After Hugo Tocalli's call-up, Lionel Messi finally traveled to the country to play with the Argentina U20 team to face Paraguay in a friendly. He went to the bench, came on with the number 17 on his shirt in place of Ezequiel Lavezzi and scored the 7-0 with a real golazo , dodging the goalkeeper and defining with an empty net.
Days later, on July 3, Messi earned a call-up to the South American Championship scheduled to take place in Colombia in 2005: at the Alberto Supicci Stadium in Colonia, the Rosario native came on in place of Pablo Vitti to play the second half against Uruguay and scored two goals in the 4-1 victory . The first, after a good turn, he faced up and fired a powerful left-footed cross for 2-1 , and he scored the third by heading in a cross from Pocho Lavezzi.
