Story:

INDEPENDIENTE CHAMPION AND RACING AGO TO B !!!

38th Date
12/22/1983 in Avellaneda: Independiente 2 (43' Ricardo Giusti and 48' Enzo Trossero), Racing Club 0

This is a national holiday for the Rojo. That day, they became champions of the Metro and turned Racing around, who were going to be relegated. Gringo Giusti scored the first for the Rojo on that unforgettable afternoon. December 22, 1983. The dream day. The perfect day. The day that Independiente became champions of the Metropolitano and in the process gave themselves a pleasure that very few teams - or none - could give themselves until now: saying goodbye to their eternal rival in the First Division. Racing had been relegated four days earlier when they lost 4-3 to their namesake from Cordoba and the blessed fixture -the Devil wanted it that way- indicated that they had to play their last match against the Rojo. Can you imagine the same situation with Boca or River, or the other way around? Or that Barcelona sends Real Madrid to relegation... That's why for the Rojo fans it was marked as a historic day. "I didn't think of any special plan for that match. With the team we had, the rivals were the ones who had to worry about how to face Independiente. I've never seen such a special atmosphere. It was a party for half of Avellaneda and a funeral for the other half.

I felt sorry for Racing because I had played for that club. But the atmosphere was so contagious that I was overcome with joy and I didn't stop celebrating. The truth is that the fans had their ideal match." Almost 16 years after the match, José Omar Pastoriza is still overcome with nostalgia. The Rojo was one point ahead of San Lorenzo and Ferro. By winning, they were taking their eleventh victory lap in local tournaments.

From the start, everything got complicated. The nerves and anxiety were more for Independiente than for Racing. In fact, up until the first thirty minutes, Gustavo Moriconi - who replaced Carlos Goyén, the starter, who was torn in that match - had worked harder than his colleague, Pantera Rodríguez.
