Pele FIRST COPA AMERICA Official gifted to Brazil Delegation COPA AMERICA 1959 Official Pennant

*Provenance: Collection of Jose Ramos Delgado PELE Teammate and Argentina National Team Player 1959*

The 1959 South American National Team Championship was the 26th edition of the South American National Team Championship, a competition that would later be called the Copa América and which is the main international football tournament for national teams in South America . It took place in Buenos Aires , Argentina , between March 7 and April 4 , 1959 .

Argentina was designated as the host of the tournament amid the disorganization existing in Conmebol , which was forced to hold two tournaments in the same year, the second being held in Ecuador .

The Brazil of Pelé , Zagallo , Didí , Vavá , Nilton Santos , and many other stars that had just been World Champion in Sweden 1958 played the 1959 South American Championship at the Monumental Stadium with all its starters. However, the title remained in the hands of Argentina , which once again won a new Copa América against its people, achieving a 1-1 draw against the Brazilians in the last match, which allowed it to win its twelfth continental title. On the other hand, Pelé was a goalscorer and named best player of the tournament.
