Most valuable player of the match: Martín Palermo (Boca Juniors)
The match was surprising and unusual, given that all three goals came in the first twelve minutes of play. First, with a pass from Delgado from the left, Palermo pushed the ball into the corner of the six-yard box. A few minutes later, Juan Román Riquelme provided a superb pass to the same player, who scored again, placing the ball low to the left of goalkeeper Iker Casillas . Seven minutes later, stoppage time came: the ball landed in the hands of Roberto Carlos , who chested it down and blasted Córdoba into the right corner with a phenomenal left-footed shot. The match then played more or less evenly, with a few more chances for the Spanish team, while Boca Juniors took care of the ball through Riquelme. Argentine Martín Palermo scored both goals that helped him win the cup without extra time, thanks to assists from teammates Marcelo Delgado and Juan Román Riquelme , despite the quick discount achieved by Brazilian Roberto Carlos for the Spanish team. With this title, Boca would win the second Intercontinental Cup in its history.
