Fangio's first victory in a TC Grand Prix
To pay off debts after the 1939 Thousand Miles, Fangio had had to sell the black 1939 Chevrolet coupe, so when the 1940 Northern Grand Prix was announced, he was on foot.

On the advice of a friend, he bought and prepared a green 1940 Chevrolet coupe in his workshop. The money to pay for it was to come from a raffle, which had the same race car as the prize. Fangio decided to keep his car almost stock in terms of engine power, reinforcing everything else to withstand the long journey. He arrived first in Tucumán, surprising with his average speed of 126 km/h (87 mph), without stopping. The climb to Potosí brought its problems, such as the mudflats of Cuandacol and Huaco.

The heat was tremendous, and the engines were suffering greatly. Several punctures sidelined him, and the most dramatic moment came when he crashed during the neutralization in La Paz, Bolivia. Problems followed: a broken radiator, high temperatures, 20 flat tires, a hit on a rock in Stage 12. Just when everyone thought it was all over, a differential change came, and more tire problems. With all this, Fangio emerged victorious in the overall standings. He spent 109 hours covering the 9,445 km. His overall average speed is 86.2 km/h. His home crowd is euphoric with this victory, his first in a TC, which will crown him Argentine Touring Car Champion.

Fangio is a true icon. This International Grand Prix of the North is one of his most important victories, and from that moment on, Fangio and Gálvez, Chevrolet and Ford, will divide TC fans for a decade.
