The 1992 Intercontinental Cup was the thirty-first edition of the tournament that pitted the winner of the Copa Libertadores de América against the winner of the European Champions Cup . It took place in a single match played on December 13, 1992 at the National Stadium in Tokyo , Japan .

This edition was contested by São Paulo of Brazil , champion of the 1992 Copa Libertadores , and Barcelona of Spain , champion of the 1991–92 European Champions Cup . Although the Catalan team took an early lead with a goal from Bulgarian striker Hristo Stoichkov , the Brazilian team managed to turn the result around with an outstanding performance from Raí , who scored the two goals that put the final figures of the match. In this way, São Paulo was crowned world champion for the first time in its history.

This final is remembered for its offensive football and the good play displayed by both teams, driven by coaches Johan Cruyff and Telê Santana , which led to a match marked by the high net playing time and the multiple goal situations presented in both areas. So much so that, years later, the referee himself, the Argentine Juan Carlos Loustau , revealed the mutual agreement between both coaches before the match, who agreed to strive to propose a fair and noble confrontation, to the point of excluding any player who did not agree with the rules of fair play
