Story:
It is very good that tributes are made during life. In this way, the person being celebrated can enjoy the festivities and be a main part of them. In addition, spectators can enjoy the exploits of the central figure in person, without having to resort to previously recorded images or the efforts of memory. However, Real Madrid went too far.
The club decided to give a great honour to one of the best footballers in its history... while he was still active. Thus, Francisco Paco Gento received applause and gifts (including a lamb) on the night of September 1, 1965. He was not even close to retirement: he was 31 years old and was a key part of the team.
River Plate was the guest at the Spanish champions' party. Although they took the lead thanks to a goal from Luis Artime, they ended up losing thanks to goals from Gento, Grosso and Pirri. On top of that, the home team had a luxury signing: Alfredo Di Stéfano, who in the final stages of his career played for Espanyol.
Gento, who would continue to score goals and win championships until his retirement in 1971, received 3 million pesetas for the match. That is worth paying tribute to!
