Although Pelé was very focused on his soccer career, when he met Rosemeri dos Reis, he decided it was time to marry her. However, he faced a major obstacle: his girlfriend's father.


According to what he recalled in his biopic, before winning her hand, he had to win over her father-in-law, and he did so by offering to shine her shoes.


“ The first serious relationship that made me want to start a family was when I met Rose here in Santos. I was a little shy at first, then I became friends with her dad, and to become friends with her father, I said, 'If she wants me to shine her shoes, I'll shine them for her, '” he told the cameras.
