SAMARA — On September 30, 1970, the Maracaná stadium was the scene of a friendly match between Brazil and Mexico known as the Game of Gratitude. A little more than three months earlier, the Verdeamarela team had won its third World Cup at the Azteca stadium in Mexico City. That conquest in Mexico was crucial in Brazilian football history. It meant the consolidation of Pelé - who gave a masterful performance in the final -, winning the three-time championship (in dispute with Italy, which had won two World Cups in the 1930s) and definitively winning the Jules Rimet trophy.
The Gratitude Game was only the twelfth meeting between both teams - a brief history that consisted of nine Brazilian victories, two losses and a draw - and its final score (2 to 1 in favor of the South Americans) the match was actually a way for Brazilians to thank Mexico for the overwhelming support they gave them during the World Cup.
