Story:
The UEFA Cup was touched by the hand of God in 1989. SSC Napoli lifted the trophy thanks, in part, to its great star Diego Maradona. The Serie A team eliminated FC PAOK Thessaloniki, VfB Leipzig and FC Girondins de Bordeaux on their way to the final. In the quarterfinals, against Juventus, they came from two goals down to finally win 3-0 at home with a goal in the last minute of extra time.
In the semi-finals, the Italians faced FC Bayern München. The Bavarian team had previously eliminated Internazionale FC after another great comeback, although this time Brazilian Careca ended their continental dreams. His double secured a draw at the Olympiastadion. In Naples, the home team won 2-0.
Naples and VfB Stuttgart then met for the first time in their history in the grand final of the UEFA Cup. The Germans had previously eliminated Lombard FC Tatabánya, NK Dinamo Zagreb, FC Groningen, Real Sociedad and 1. FC Dynamo Dresden. Maradona's goal in the 68th minute of the first leg of the grand final did a lot of damage to the Germans. The Argentine got a penalty that he himself converted, and established the equalizer after Maurizio Gaudino's initial goal for the Germans. A subsequent goal from Careca sealed the tie, as the second leg ended in a 3-3 draw at the Neckarstadion.
Diego Armando Maradona (30 October 1960 – 25 November 2020) was an Argentine professional football player and manager. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, he was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the 20th Century award. An advanced playmaker who operated in the classic number 10 position, Maradona's vision, passing, ball control, and dribbling skills were combined with his small stature, which gave him a low centre of gravity and allowed him to manoeuvre better than most other players. His presence and leadership on the field had a great effect on his team's general performance, while he would often be singled out by the opposition. In addition to his creative abilities, he possessed an eye for goal and was known to be a free kick specialist. A precocious talent, Maradona was given the nickname El Pibe de Oro ("The Golden Boy"), a name that stuck with him throughout his career.
