South American Championship 1916:
The 1916 South American National Team Championship was the first edition of the contest, a competition that would later be succeeded by the Copa América and which is the main international soccer cup contested by national teams in South America . It took place in Buenos Aires , Argentina , between July 2 and 17, 1916. The dispute of the tournament coincided with the celebrations for the centenary of the declaration of independence of Argentina . In addition, the realization of the cup was of vital importance for the founding of the South American Football Confederation , which took place in the middle of the competition, on July 9 , 1916 .
