Story: The 1977 Intercontinental Cup was the seventeenth edition of the tournament, pitting the winner of the Copa Libertadores de América against the winner of the European Champions Cup . The competition was played in the usual home-and-away format, with each team playing at home in one match.
This year's tournament was played between Boca Juniors of Argentina , winners of the 1977 Copa Libertadores , and Borussia Mönchengladbach of West Germany , finalists of the 1976–77 European Champions Cup —in place of champions Liverpool of England . Due to scheduling conflicts, the matches were held the following year, on March 21 in Buenos Aires , Argentina , and on August 1 in Karlsruhe , West Germany . After a draw in South American territory in the first leg, the Argentine team upset the odds and won the second leg with a historic 3–0 victory. Boca Juniors thus achieved their first title as world champions.
