Franz Anton Beckenbauer (11 September 1945 – 7 January 2024) was a German professional football player, manager, and official. Nicknamed der Kaiser ("the Emperor"), he is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, and is one of nine players to have won the FIFA World Cup, the European Champions Cup, and the Ballon d'Or. Beckenbauer was a versatile player who started out as a midfielder, but made his name as a central defender. He is often credited as having invented the role of the modern sweeper

Match Facts:

River versus New York Cosmos 1980
Winter of 1980, River was heading towards the three-time championship and on July 30, it faced the New York Cosmos at Giant's Stadium. At that time it no longer had Pelé, but it had stars like Beckenbauer, Rijsbergen, Neeskens, Chinaglia, Eskandarian (the Iranian who played in Argentina '78), the Paraguayans Julio Cesar Romero “Romerito” and a very young Roberto Cabañas. Angelito Labruna's team, for its part, traveled with all its current figures, taking to the field with Fillol (Landaburu) Comelles, Pavoni, Passarella, Tarantini (Héctor López), JJ López, Merlo (De Los Santos), Alonso, Pedro González (Ramón Díaz), Luque and Comisso.
For the occasion, the Aerolíneas Argentina Cup was put into play. The match in question ended 1-1 and the goals were scored by Negro López at 83, with a certain Bogicevic tying at 90.
A colorful detail was that when it was played on synthetic grass, some players used the footwear provided by Puma, others did not reach an economic agreement to wear them, and Beto Alonso played with some old and almost dilapidated Flecha, as we can see in the photo. The other image shows us the original Kaiser, making a personal mark on a no longer so fast Pedrito González.
A couple of years later the American team ended up disappearing and most of its stars retired. Something similar would happen to the millionaire in 1982/1983, without the plethora of figures who were part of this team.
